Head Teacher: norma collson

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." ~ Nelson Mandela

Teaching is my passion. I love watching young minds explore new ideas.  From the time I was very small I wanted to be a teacher.  I used to line up my stuffed animals and teach them. I have now been teaching for 25 years, and I still enjoy it.

Being able to teach in our Adventist schools has been one of my greatest joys.  I enjoy sharing my love for Jesus and what He has done in my life. I believe it is a privilege to be able to work where I can share my faith openly with my students.

I have taught in Dunlap for the past year and I love the country atmosphere and the wonderful students I teach.  I taught in smaller schools as the head teacher for 23 years and then taught 4th grade at A.W. Spalding in Collegedale, TN for 4 years.  These environments have made me the teacher I am today.

I use teaching methods that inspire students to want to learn more.  My theme is "Dream Big."  I apply this theme to the subjects I teach in order to inspire my students to reach higher for their dreams and to strive to do their best. I am a very hands-on teacher.  In my classroom you will often find science experiments, read alouds, mind maps, media, simulations, special worships, hands-on activities and much more. I feel students retain so much more when they can experience the learning. I am always looking for fresh new ways to present content.

I try to look at each situation with a positive attitude. I do my best to work well with others and to be a team player. I give my best to my job and ask for God's wisdom as I work with His children.

Education, pp. 17, 18—“It is the work of true education . . . to train the youth to be thinkers, and not mere reflectors of other men’s thought." ~ Ellen G. White

About Me

I was raised in an Adventist family.  My mother was a homemaker and my father was a pastor. I grew up with morning and evening worship, which is something my husband and I have continued in our own family, even now after the children are gone. I love teaching and being involved in church work. Jesus is very real to me, and I want to share Him with others.

My hobbies are camping, backpacking, hiking, reading, photography, and cooking. I love the outdoors and enjoy the beautiful nature around me.

About My Family

My husband, Todd, is a registered nurse.  He worked in surgery for many years, managed the out-patient surgery department in a local hospital and now works for Memorial Home Health in Chattanooga, Jasper, Dunlap, and Whitwell.  He is very active in church work.  He is a Godly husband and father.  We have been married 27 years.

My son, Eric, is a surgery nurse at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.  He is married to Brittany Leavitt. She is a graphic design artist for Morning Pointe Assisted Living Centers.

My daughter, Sara, is a teacher in Ontario, California and her husband Jeremy Holt is in Dental school at Loma Linda University in California.
